My understanding is they switched from the "airbag" style landing (Pathfinder, Opportunity) to the rocket assisted delivery (Curiosity, Perseverance) to the Mars surface is that it allows them to land more capable (and therefore heavier) rovers, as the airbags do not provide enough cushioning...
