To calibrate telescopes on Earth, NASA's launching an 'artificial star' to orbit

In the case of the latter - could large observatories publish real-time calibration data and might be used by nearby amateurs for calibration/adaptive use (descreasingly accuraute with distance from transmitter/scope) ? Also noticed NIST and Lawrence are involved - could possibly be dual-use as...

To calibrate telescopes on Earth, NASA's launching an 'artificial star' to orbit

Interesting - I assumed they were going to use it for adaptive optics - the standard candle reference use case is way better. Anyone know if it can be used by amateurs or does it need to directly target a scope to be effective. Imagine the latter - but hoping for the former!

NASA weighs potential impacts of helium leaks and more on Boeing's Starliner astronaut test flight

I thought the same - that the compressed Helium was the propellant for the RCS thrusters and therefore issues were connected. Regardless - I’m going to book my flights based on plane manufacturer until they get some new execs over there . Unfortunately not a lot of Airbus or Bombadiers flying...

NASA weighs potential impacts of helium leaks and more on Boeing's Starliner astronaut test flight

Oh man - just trying imagine how that stuff would behave in microgravity and reduced atmospheric pressure. “Now 10x more expansion and 20x the noxious fumes!” When I was 12 me and some friends found a case of that stuff (Dad was a GC) and got in a “silly string” fight with it. That’s...
