America First' on the moon? US must 'dominate' in space, acting NASA chief says during lunar landing

Whilst I think nobody would quibble with the idea that the US has been and should continue to be a leader in Space exploration the acting NASA administrator's choice to use the words "dominate" and "domination" with their military related connotations rather than "lead" and "leadership" does...

Risks with current Artemis 3 moon landing plan 'may be too high,' NASA safety group says

One thing about the proposed Artemis mission architecture that really seems astonishing is that it requires no less than 15 fueling launches! OK I know the system has a much larger Human Landing System than the old Apollo LM and that they are targetting the lunar south pole region with a maximum...

Strange Earth 'quasi-moon' named Cardea, after goddess of door hinges

To me the most amazing thing about this story is that there is a Goddess of door hinges! :tearsofjoy:

Clyde Tombaugh: The astronomer who discovered Pluto

Recent article on space.com https://www.space.com/19824-clyde-tombaugh.html The article says "The telescope at the observatory was equipped with a camera that would take two photographs of the sky on different days. A device known as a blink compactor rapidly flipped back and forth between the...

How the 'Great Filter' could explain why we haven't found intelligent aliens

Beat me to it. Apart from anything else a true interstellar ship would need to be self sufficient, both in energy and necessary resources (food, water etc). The ISS gets its energy from solar panels (not much use in interstellar space!) and it relies on frequent cargo deliveries of food from Earth.

SpaceX test-fires Super Heavy booster for 7th Starship launch (video, photos)

Good points. Of course the Starships landing on the Moon will still have a substantial amount of propellants as they need to lift off from the surface again to rendezvous with the lunar gateway.

SpaceX test-fires Super Heavy booster for 7th Starship launch (video, photos)

My understanding is that in the short term SpaceX's development tests intend to catch starship with the chopsticks in a similar fashion to the super heavy booster catch already demonstrated. This removes the weight of the landing legs, so optimising the load capacity of starships that return...

The signal to noise ratio on this thread is very low..... :tearsofjoy:

    WOW Decoded? ..... 6 E Q U J 5

Bowers3934, no offence was intended, I just wasn't sure if you had understood my point about the arbitrary nature of the sampling and the resultant recorded values. In relation to your "YES" response does that reflect your belief that 1800 years ago aliens sent a message to Earth and they...

    WOW Decoded? ..... 6 E Q U J 5

As the signal originated 1800 light years away it originated 1800 years ago. The graph of the signal you posted shows the sample rate as every 12 seconds. ( 5 sampling intervals between 0 and 60 seconds on the graph, 5 sampling intervals between 60 seconds and 120 seconds, 5 sampling intervals...

    WOW Decoded? ..... 6 E Q U J 5

A Light Year (LY) is a unit of distance, not time. Also I note you haven't commented on my post that pointed out that the digital sampling timing that resulted in the 6EQUJ5 sequence was purely arbitrary and a different sampling interval or start time would have resulted in a completely...

    WOW Decoded? ..... 6 E Q U J 5

Bowers3934, the graph of the WOW! signal you posted shows that the signal received on Earth was sampled at 12 second intervals to produce the 6EQUJ5 code sequence you mention. However the actual timing of the equipment digital sampling in relation to the incoming signal was purely arbitrary, if...

Trump picks billionaire private SpaceX astronaut Jared Isaacman to lead NASA

Jared Isaacman could be a good choice to lead NASA, having twice already been into space as a private astronaut, so with obvious technical knowledge and experience of spaceflight, and a passion for exploration. However I had to have a smile at the hyperbole of his statement that "With the...

NASA delays budget-cut decision about Hubble and Chandra space telescopes

As long as existing launched space telescopes are continuing to return useful scientific data it seems foolish to curtail their operation as a result of budget constraints. The large costs of designing, building and launching them have already been spent, so continuing running the operation of...

Europe's bold 'Explore 2040' campaign aims to get astronauts to the moon and Mars

Quite ambitious plans from ESA, however the final sentence in the report is the crucial bit "ESA's vision for 2040 hinges not only on innovative projects but on the unwavering support of its 22 member states to transform plans into reality". As was said in the early days of manned spaceflight...
