SpaceX Raptor Methane Fuel vs. NASA SLS Hydrogen Engine

The RS-25 just did a 600 second test. I doubt Raptor could match it. I think RS-25 could probably burn even longer. Perhaps converted to methalox with Raptors used for landing?

    Question space elevator space station

A lunar elevator is perhaps the most doable. This object is the nearest asteroid that sticks around. Now I think asteroid mining might best be done by coaxing an asteroid’s mass into cables and drawing them out for ease of transport. Now I think two elevators might be better. Imagine two...

    Dyson Sphere thread

Exactly 40 years ago this month, “Science Digest” gave us a look at the inside of a Dyson Megasphere https://pictures.abebooks.com/WHOLLYMOLY/13045307528_5.jpg https://www.abebooks.com/first-edition/Science-Digest-October-1982-Lost-Tribes/13045307528/bd

Question Does this material also reduce the amount of the radiation and cosmic particles the astronauts are exposed to?

Stopping embrittlement is the goal here https://www.newscientist.com/article/2343246-aluminium-alloy-could-boost-spacecraft-radiation-shielding-100-fold/ And you want tight fits...

Is Star Trek's Curvature Ship Really Possible?

You mean warp ship? Perhaps The closest thing to the Enterprise was this Shuttle-C type concept here—see Figure https://www.aiaa.org/docs/default-source/uploadedfiles/about-aiaa/history-and-heritage/shuttlevariationsfinalaiaa.pdf?sfvrsn=b8875e90_0 If people will stop trying to kill it, SLS...

    Can You suggest something.

Well, if we ever get a real warp ship…it will have to be ring shaped. Matt Jeffries actually drew one very early on. He was on to something

    How To Alien Propulsion Technology

Carlo Rubbia’s Americium 242 concepts need to be looked at again. The concept of jacketed thrust streams might allow Nuclear Salt Water Rockets…the outermost hollow stream “holds” an inner hotter stream no nozzle could handle.

    external ship frame material

The old idea is that RLVs will allow orbital space industrialization. I have the opposite view. Get some big External Tank station concepts up there…based on SLS wet workshops—-and maybe grow an RLV THERE in LEO. Then it might be so lightweight as to actually be an SSTO, with in-space...

SpaceX Raptor Methane Fuel vs. NASA SLS Hydrogen Engine

LH2 is best for nuclear engines. I hope SLS evolves into something like Energia. Side mount for outsized aerobrake disks…simplified Buran type orbiter. Use spent cores as wet workshops. SLS is a lot like the Convair Atlas as a stage-and-a-half system, and the core emits no CO2. SuperHeavy to...

Does space science or exploration require people? For any research project?

Spontaneity has often driven breakthroughs. ISS is sprawling—yet still cramped. Every moment seems pre-planned…it is very like an endurance test. With ring stations….zero gravity is a walk—not a launch-away. Robots stay in the hub for tests…and you can walk to repair them. Spontaneity is...
