Intense solar storm supercharges auroras over UK and more (photos)

What a delightful treat to view the "Luck" of the UK to have such spectacular Auroras. In Southern, cloudy nights plagued, ambient light accursed New York, Nature distains showing us her beauty.

Greenland's glaciers are melting 100 times faster than estimated

We may be entering a new geological epoch, maybe. Those alive 100-200 years from now will know and can mutter about how we couldn't be more insightful. For now, I'll forego that ocean front beach house, "just steps from the water".

US Space Force practices 'space combat tactics' to win a European conflict

We formerly tree dwelling, African Savannah trotting, lethal weapon wielding, bipedal primates are making another Evolutionary "Leap". It's the stuff of science fiction made real.

Stargazing Betelgeuse will be visible as a Supernova in March of 2025

Thanks Truthseeker, a nice professional analysis. Having a 2023 possible date for a supernova adds "a bit of needed "brightness" to our currently depressing global/political situations.

If aliens have visited the solar system, here's how to find clues they left

Thanks for the insights. Personally, I'm grimly cynical. The "hope" attributed to extra-terrestrials/technology seems to me to be a form of Deus Ex Machina. I think that either humanity, (H. Sapiens or an evolved species), will have to leave Earth to survive/avoid extinction or alternatively...

If aliens have visited the solar system, here's how to find clues they left

Personally, I don't care if space aliens/life exists. My concern is how much of my tax money will be devoted to the looking task on a seemingly endless basis? My other concern is: if found would such life forms be ruthlessly exploited for all of those H. Sapiens reasons replete through History?

Star blasted stellar nursery in 'Orion's sword' seen in detail

Fantastic work. The Orion asterism is the jewel of clear, cold northern winter nights.

Outer space is not the "Wild West": There are clear rules for peace and war

At least the fictional Darth Vader looked and sounded like a "bad guy". Now days, we have Nibelungen nebbish looking paranoid bureaucrats and politicians with their tax payer paid for manicured fingers on the destruct buttons. At least in the Star Wars script, with Darth Vader there was no...

'Doomsday Glacier' is teetering even closer to disaster than scientists thought, new seafloor map shows

Thanks folks for an informative discussion, even if somewhat seemingly a little bit "Brass Knuckled" at times. Hopefully, more definitive data on that "leaky glacier" will be forthcoming soon.

'We can find life outside the solar system in 25 years', researcher says

I'm surprised that we have not detected off Earth microbial life or traces of such in our solar system. That situation may be an indicator of reality. IMO, complex life forms and optimistically those that are euphemistically termed "Little Green Men" do not exist. i.e.: Have not evolved within...

'Doomsday Glacier' is teetering even closer to disaster than scientists thought, new seafloor map shows

It seems like the current global spate of forest fires, droughts, volcanic activity, heat waves, coral reef deaths, ice sheet melting, related extinctions are more intense and in greater number than occurred in the recent, (200 - 300 year), past. Human activity may have markedly exacerbated a...

Discovery suggests red supergiant Betelgeuse was actually yellow 2,000 years ago

1.5my to Betelgeuse's SN. Oh well! I'll probably miss it.

The 6th mass extinction hasn't begun yet, study claims, but Earth is barreling toward it

None of us want the foolhardy destruction of our complex civilization and technological society via rapacious environmental collapse. Perhaps, age, current global environmental degradations and cynicism spur my harsh, bleak outlook for a humanity reduced to tribal clearings and campfires...

The 6th mass extinction hasn't begun yet, study claims, but Earth is barreling toward it

@ Unclear Engineer: I hope your analysis is correct; I'm just not so sanguine about ability/willingness to mitigate or switch our fossil energy lifestyle.

The 6th mass extinction hasn't begun yet, study claims, but Earth is barreling toward it

The Passenger Pigeon is the iconic example of extinction via loss of habitat from human activity. The latest endangered species warning is for the beautiful Monarch Butterfly. Perhaps humans just don't to want to realize/recognize the situation that by our economic and social actions we have...
