Question What is your favorite weird fact about space?

The accretion process whereby a huge dust/gas cloud is perturbed, coalesces (first via Van Der Waals forces, then gravity), accretes into larger and larger masses and ultimately becomes a sun and entire solar system.

    Expansion

This appears to be so. Animals may abstract, but their abstractions are germane only to their day-to-day existence. Hunans, however, do so about things that don't even exist.

    What star is this?

There is satellite imagery floating around out there that does show a decrease in light-pollution, on average, in major urban areas around the world since Covid-19 became a real issue. Hope that helps answer your question.

The Return of the Space.com Community!

Ah well, that's a pity, but I see the problems as you'd described. As to letting the word get around, yes, I know a fair number of former members here, I've been letting them know as I run into them,

The Return of the Space.com Community!

Hi guys. I'd registered here a few days ago, and had noticed that the userbase, as yet, was painfully small. When Tech Media Networks pulled the plug on us back when, we had over 585k registered members. So, a suggestion: Obviously you guys have all of the old, legacy information from the...

    What star is this?

Educated guess - not a star, but Venus. It will be visible in the night sky, near the moon, from the 25th through the 27th.

    Amusing and of Interest

Not, per se, a book, but from the annals of chemist Derek Lowe. This is the subsection of his ongoing blog at ScienceMag, called, "Things I Won't Work With." For those of you with an interest in Chemistry, it's an eye-opener and frequently very humorous, as he chronicles things that only the...

    Mars Colonies are a Fantasy

Ugh, Carter. I was serving in the Army as a radar/missile tech. when he was President. A dearth of imagination and follow through. Yes, Jon is a proponent of robotic based exploration, although he was not against manned missions as well. It simply depended on the what and the where. And...

    Mars Colonies are a Fantasy

I must admit, it's good that conversations can occur here. The userbase is still painfully small. In the old days, when Tech Media Networks pulled the plug on us, we had over 585k registered members. Hopefully the numbers here will increase. I am also a (now former) engineer. I understand...

    Mars Colonies are a Fantasy

I overestimate none of this. In point of fact, one of our old SDC Moderators was Doctor Jon Clarke, who in fact was/is a project scientist for various Mars rover projects. His skew on their capabilities was far different than yours, I'm afraid. Within their limitations they are quite capable...

    Mars Colonies are a Fantasy

Ultimately, this renders to a cost/benefit analysis. What is there to Mars that would be ultimately valuable to us? Research? As noted, this can be adequately done using purpose-built rovers. Living space? That's an awful difficult thing to justify, given the sheer distance, small amounts...

No, the coronavirus didn't come from outer space. We promise.

The concept of Panspermia is all fine and well, but expecting a space-borne pathogen to identically conform to known Earth variants is a bit much, yeah.

Introduce yourself! (And show us your swag)

Well, this is exciting. Hello. I am Yevaud. As with Mental_Avenger, I am one of Space Dot Coms original members and was a Moderator there for over six years. There right from the beginning; there the literal last day the boards were online. The original message boards were a unique...
