read the article: http://www.space.com/scienceastronomy/heavy_blazar_040628.html

There is something that confuses me.
If the Black hole is 12.7 billion light years away, and the black hole is also 12.7 billion years old, then surely that must mean that the black hole was 10 billion solar masses big just 1 billion years after the big bang because we are seeing it how it was 12.7 billion years ago.

Correct me if i'm wrong.

no, that's about right. assuming your numbers are right (I don't have time to read the article, I"m procrastinating a stellar atmosphere's assignment as is...)

--------------------SaiphMOD@gmail.com -------------------

"This is my Timey Wimey Detector. Goes "bing" when there's stuff. It also fries eggs at 30 paces, wether you want it to or not actually. I've learned to stay away from hens: It's not pretty when they blow" -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

That just seems astonishingly huge since it has had only 1 billion years to form into the biggest supermassive black hole we are yet to discover.

Perhaps such a black hole had an important role in the shaping of the known universe. *shrug*

Reread the article. It says that the black hole is 12.7 billion light-years away and also appears to be 12.7 billion years old. So are they determining the mass of the black hole how it was 12.7 billion years ago?

Pehaps the black hole doesn't exist anymore, and Maybe it was half that size (but still very large) 13 billion years ago.
