I'm not sure why the publishers of this recent paper are claiming first.

“Hyper-Spectral All-Sky Imaging of Auroras,” Optics Express, Vol. 20, Issue 25, pp. 27650-27660 (2012).

I'd look into that and consider a correction to the article.

My guess is this is narrower spectral, angular and time resolution. Maybe even polarization. In the cafes along the river the astronomers will see your reference, stab out their cigarettes in empty wine glasses and angrily insist their creation be termed "Neo-Hyper-Spectral".
