2001: A Space Odyssey -- To IMAX??

Nope. Recent software advances can enlarge and enhance video to the point a non-professional can't tell the difference. It's even possible to turn it into high quality 3D for projection or to take blurred frames and reconstruct their details. <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> </div>

You went to the SF showings too? <img src="/images/icons/wink.gif" /><br /><br />BTW: Ridley Scott is doing a "definitive cut" of "Blade Runner" for its 25th anniversary. This will include changes & footage not in the previous "directors cut" for budgetary reasons. This time Warner cut him loose. <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> </div>

They've done Digital remastering of some films, including Apollo 13, into IMAX format which I'm told looked amazing. However, 2001 was in a very widescreen aspect ratio of 2:40 to 1 and the IMAX shape is closer to a conventional nearly 'square TV' shape of 4:3. They could make an exception for 2001; blowing it up to the frame width of IMAX, then 'cropping' it top and bottom to preserve its original shape. 2001 was originally released in Super Panavision 70 which was a single camera version of Cinerama, a precursor to IMAX. I saw 2001(not my first time) at Balboa park's space theatre(probably around 1992 or thereabouts). They had a version where when Bowman goes into 'big brother', instead of just the planets lining up and the camera panning off into some void, 'big brother' involuted like your looking at an infinities of you's when standing between two mirrors. <br /><br />I tried to tell some 2001 website about it to see if they could find out about it, but after like a year or so, they replied with "i tried my butt off to find anyone who knows about it . . . and i can't find anybody who's heard anything about it"!<br /><br />oh well . . . ;
