Hello all:

I am not sure if this is the correct forum to post this question, and if not, I apologize. I have been looking for a 3 dimentional star map, or software for my computer, and am having difficulty finding one. Do any based on real stars and data exist (I have seen the Star Trek one)? If so, where might they be found?

Thanks
Nevers will likely answer that.

Meanwhile, have you checked out the space.com program Starry Night?

I have Starry Night Pro 4.2. I like the program quite a bit. However, I am looking for something different. Something where you can move from point to point through the stars, and see the stars plotted with respect to each other 3-dimensionally. I don't know if it even exists...

I'm not sure it exists. There are lots of programs out there but when you get to ones that are better then SNP, the price of the program is rather high and I haven't investigated them in depth. I'll look into it further this weekend.

Here's several options for the thing your looking for:

http://www.projectrho.com/smap07.html

the first thing on this list that I looked at is the Celestia program (free!):

http://www.shatters.net/celestia/

Try others if this one doesn't satisfy you

However the DEMOS of Celestia are REALLY IMPRESSIVE. You can click File /> Load Script... and click demo, it's Awesome 3d with shading clouds sunspots moons just about everything!

The sun even wobbles when you make the speed high! Turn orbits on.

Akira Inaka has some beautiful anaglyphs (red/blue glasses required) that he said took him some seven years to produce. Many of the points in the graphics proceed more than an inch from the screen. Something to see to be sure.

They could be used to create the wireframe for the graphics similar to what you are looking for, although I doubt if anyone has attempted anything of this scale. I tried unsuccessfully to pursuade Akira to publish the books in the US.

http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~AQ6A-INK/indexusa.htm

DenniSys.com
