I only saw it for the first time this morning although it was posted on the 10th of June at the planetary photojournal site. I think it deserves it's own thread for those who haven't seen it yet.

Personally, I've been waiting for a long time to see this image. I know there have already been one or two but they've been rather small and blurry so far.

This one is available in hi-res (there's also a 14 meg tiff), it's absolutely beautiful and boy does it stir the imagination!

Martian Sunset.

http://photojournal.jpl.nasa.gov/jpeg/PIA07997.jpg

I wish I could remember
But my selective memory
Won't let me - Mark Oliver Everett

Agreed. This photo has been, and will continue to be, the backround for my laptops. Of all the photos returned from the MERs, this one strikes an emotional cord for me. It somehow makes Mars a real place...
Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will to strive, to seek, to find and not to yeild. - Tennyson

I thought rlb2's rendering of this image (he did it first by the way) was much better than JPL's.

http://uplink.space.com/showflat.php?Cat=&Board=sciastro&Number=137121&page=0&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=0&fpart=23&vc=1

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -

I really, really, really miss the "first unread post" function.

Yes you're right, rlb's has more of a planetary romance flavour, I think. He did choose one slightly earlier than the NASA version, before the sun has hit the horizon, so possibly theirs should be as dark and blue as it appears. Perhaps they're just trying to appeal to extrasense?

Browsing through that particular section also reminded me of the all of excellent work Swampy did alongside rl.

Who else thinks that our own rlb2 and Swampcat deserve some come kind of award?

Edit: I forgot to add later that I noticed he'd done a few versions of that sunset. The one NASA released in colour as well as the one taken slightly earlier. Both were warmer and friendlier.

I wish I could remember
But my selective memory
Won't let me - Mark Oliver Everett
