This is suggested in the Space.com article about possible life on Titan, the big moon of Saturn. Aceteylene C2H2 has half as much hydrogen as the valance of 4 of cabon suggests. Is the process reversable to renew the acetylene? How else can acetylene be made besides water and calcium carbide? Neil

Neil - Can you post tbe chemical symbol for calcium carbide?

Methane, CH4, has 4 times as much hydrogen per carbon as C2H2 - I assume you realized that!

CH4 is, if I remember correctly, broken down by photlysis (photodissociation). If carbon is abundant in the environment, it would allow recombining as C2H2.

Sorry, I'm rusty on this.

Can you link the article?

What is the overall composition of Titan?
