Say a rogue blacok hole were to pass thru the solar system. Wo we have any hope of surviving that kind of catastrophe?

Depends on the mass of the black hole. If extremelly small black holes exist, we could survive. A few scientists have theorized that the Tunguska event was caused by a passing black hole. Personally, I'm not a big fan of that theory however, but thats just me.

If the BH is of significant size, and I'm not sure how big that would be but we probably would not survive.

My borrowed quote for the time being:

There are three kinds of people in life. Those who make it happen, those who watch it happen...and those who do not know what happened.

Isn't this the 3rd or 4th time this question has been asked (although in different forms) since January?

A recent black hole survay found fewer than expected, so the probability of a black hole passing though our solar system is reduced. As the others posted, A ten or more solar mass black hole that passed Earth closer than 100 million kilometers, would, all but surely, kill everyone on Earth. If the black hole did not come closer than Pluto, some Earthlings would likely survive. Neil

The chances of this happening without a couple of million years notice is absolutly zero.

.

Never roll in the mud with a pig. the black hole thing would suck!!!, but i would like to think we'd have ampel (spl???) warning.

as to life on another planet; i highly doubt we'd ever come across any or if we did it'll never be as intelligent as us (mabye bacteria, etc.). the was i see it, unless a more intelligent species comes to us we'll never make it to the right planet or galaxy for that matter befor something either happens to us or them (like them getting wiped out by a black hole ). plus, how many billions of years did it take us to get this far up the evolutionary chain? so if life takes that long to develope what are the chances of it happening at the same time as us?
