Just curious to see if anyone out in SDC land plays any MMO games. I have stayed away from them in the past until I purchased the matrix online. I have to admit I am a little hooked now, when I get to play, unfortunately I cannot be a hardcore gamer because I just don’t have the time to be on 24/7 like some of those people are.

LOL. Some games can really do that to ya. I kinda wanted to play an MMORPG over the summer, but i get sick of cheaters really fast. Biggest problems in MMORPGs is Playerkilling and hacking, both of which Suck the fun right out of it. I thought about it, but you really can't play more than one. I was trying to decide which one to play, Star Wars Galaxies looked interesting, but i've been hearing a lot of bad stuff about the recent changes. I also considered FFXI, but that's hacked ridiculously... I've been looking at Guild Wars too (mainly cause there's no monthly Fee. big plus.)
I think i'll stay out of it for now, though.

To kinda make this more scifi related, You should check out the near-future Game/anime series, Dot Hack (.hack//) it takes place, actually, in 2010. There's 4 games, i just got them recently. it was made in 2003, and the predictions still seem entirely possible. it's centered around the series of events concerning an MMORPG called "the World". It follows the Character Kite, who is invited into the game by his friend in "real life", Orca (the in-game name). Orca goes into a Coma after being Killed in the game, and Kite finds out it's not the first time that's happened...

um... I really don't know how to respond to that so i'm just going to say:
MMORPG=massive multiplayer online Role playing game, for those who don't know. And by massive, we're talking thousands. Some of the really big ones could even be getting towards a million, i really don't know

Played Ultima Online during it's prime several years ago. Brought back memories of the old single player games for a little while but really nothing like it especially these days.

Also played Star Wars Galaxies for about six months or so after it's release. Sorta fun but being stuck to one character per server killed it for me and many others.

Currently playing Dark Age of Camelot. Smaller playerbase but the rvr/pvp is not really matched by any game out there.
Currently Playing World Of Warcraft...it is the only MMORPG that I have ever played for more than a month and is from what I understand one of the best ones out there.
I have tried:
Everquest
Anarchy Online
Dark Age of Camelot
EVE Online
Earth and Beyond
umm, I think thats it...This one is leaps and bounds better than the ones I listed above.

My guildmates are all former long time Dark age of Camelot players who have totally converted over. Definatly worth a look if you like these kind of games.

You also dont need to be Hardcore to play...maybe a total of 5hrs a week will get you far in a little space of time.

lots of people are switching from WoW to Guild wars because there's apparently some annoying things that the producers did, and that Guild WArs has no monthly fee...

In reply to:

lots of people are switching from WoW to Guild wars because there's apparently some annoying things that the producers did, and that Guild WArs has no monthly fee...

Most people in Blizzard's games end up getting annoyed because the games are updated often, and player balance is changed to make things more fair for everyone. People who had been used to dominating others with their characters and suddently see their abilities changed -- maybe even dwarfed -- can't adapt and complain they're not as strong as they used to.

As for people switching from World of Warcraft to Guild Wars, I wouldn't say "lots". Some have tried it because it's a great game and a nice alternative that doesn't require a monthly fee, but it's a different style of play and doesn't quite trump WoW's amazing strengths, in my opinion.

Anyone interested in SF massively multiplayer games should check out Anarchy Online (old but free for one year) or the upcoming Auto Assault, set in a post-apocalyptic world where everyone has futuristic cars to drive around and fight.

For about 7 months, I was a big WoW player. But a couple of months after I got my warrior to level 60 (the maximum level) and did a few high-level raids I got burned out and quit. Even my numerous alts (though I did love my warlock) couldnt get me back on.

WoW is a terrific game the first time thru to levels 1-59 but once you reach 60 your sense of progress is smashed completely as all you have left to do is raid high level instances for a small % to get that item you want, and have to roll against other people who want it. Even PvP battlegrounds get stale after a while, as the latter climb against other people is grueling, and it involves participating in the same zergfests at AV or WSG over and over again.

When it came down to it, WoW just had an extremely lacking endgame. Its still - IMO - the best MMO on the market so if anyone wants to give this genre a shot I wholeheartedly recommend it. Just dont expect it to stick with you forever.

I've been playing Star Wars Galaxies for about 18 months now, and finally starting to burn out on it. The devs there do like to swing the nerf bat when it's found that one profession is too strong. The main beef is that they push bugs to live without even acknowledging that they exist until they fix them, which often takes far too long. Apparently LucasArts is getting annoyed with how Sony Online Entertainment is handling the development, which I find funny because LucasArts pulls all the strings.

But for anyone who wants to live in the Star Wars universe, fly an X-Wing or TIE fighter, or swing a lightsaber (which takes a long time to get), then it's worth a shot.

EVE online all the way.
Its the only one ive played that has many mature and nice people (also the biggest). Guild wars is alright but just gets boring. WoW was alright but it slowly dawns on you that loads of people have done the same mission and that you are not really unique. Frequently eve has special problems that the devs make (pirates stealing a capital ship that you can stop) this will enable your face to be posted on a billboard in-game and they will even interview you for the game news.
Last good point is that it is a heavy espionage game, one corporation infiltrated another, for a year, and assasinated the CEO, and stole assets that...
"The total of their gains could be aucitioned on gaming sites for upwards of $16k."
but this is just my view...everyone has different tastes so WoW, GW, planetside might be to your liking..all of them are good games

Heres the link to a magazine that shows it
http://www.mmodig.com/?p=155

p.s. i mostly like it cause its space

I played Everquest on and off for almost 4 years. Now I just play poker online a couple nights a week and read SDC daily.
"2012.. Year of the Dragon!! Get on the Dragon Wagon!".

I read an article once about an organisation called "Everquest Widows" that supports families that have broken up due to mans obsession with MMORPGs. After reading this, I have not dared to start playing one. Mind you I do not have the internet connection speed (nor the time) anyway.

Like i said, check out .hack. As you meet characters in the game, several of them comment on not having much money or very much to eat, even quitting their jobs so they can have more time to play the game "The world".
It is a little bit scary...

I first started playing MMORPG's back during "Neverwinter Nights" on AOL. It was a great way to interact and stay in touch with friends who had moved away. It sure did bring back memories of us all sitting hunched over a coffee table, rolling dice and playing our beloved, old school, D+D.

We all still use MMO's to stay in touch and interact with each other even though many of us are pushing 40. Currently, we play WoW. It's alot of fun and we have a good time together. Having a server for voice chat helps keep down the telephone bills too.

It's nice to stay "young minded" even though we're all firmly entrenched in real-life-adulthood.
I put on my robe and wizard hat...
