AP-Russia-Space Station

Russia set to start charging U-S for deliveries to space station

MOSCOW (AP) - Russia is telling the U-S not to expect any more
free rides -- at least not to space.
The head of the Russian space program is telling ITAR-Tass news
agency about plans to start charging the U-S for deliveries to the
international space station, starting next year.
Although Russia and the U-S agreed to split the costs of sending
crews and supplies to the space station, only Russian spacecraft
have been used since last year's space shuttle disaster grounded
the U-S program.
Russian space officials say by carrying the sole burden, Russia
has fulfilled its part of the bargain.
At least two Soyuz ships and three Progress ships are needed
every year to maintain the station and rotate its crews.
NASA is aiming to resume shuttle flights next spring.

(Copyright 2004 by The Associated Press.
