Discovery is marketing here in Brazil a documentary about Apollo 11. They say that Apollo 11 was "saved by a pen";

They mentions problems like the the altimeter/radar fail as revelations known by no-one, a subject indeed well-know for years... But a pen?
What does it mean?

FYI
Contrary to popular belief NASA did not "spend millions of tax payer dollars" to develop a space pen. Fisher took it upon itself to market their pressurized ink pen as a "space pen" and pitched them to NASA as the perfect pen for 0G use. NASA paid nothing for the development.
