<p>It's great to see that, eh, *we* can also launch, fly and navigate a giant craft in outer-space effortlessly. Video docking allows completely autonomous joining of large modules on orbit.<br /> </p><p>All we need is a re-entry module now and we could start building that Moon or Mars station. ATV is already man-rated, the launcher is not.&nbsp;</p>

But that's the impression that one could get when watching the docking rehearsal. The craft just danced around.</p><p>Yes, I think ATV is man-rated already. One would need to install seats and accompanying gear to haul up astronauts aswell. Ofcourse that is an extreme simplification of the problem of launching astronauts.</p><p>Man-rating the launcher, a modified Ariane 5ES-ATV, could be a bigger problem. There would need to be an escape system, which might render the whole setup too heavy. </p>

But ATV becomes part of the habitable volume of the ISS, so man-rating it was one of the design principles.</p><p>Also, I don't think we will see ATV's for astronauts anytime soon. One obstacle is the high price.</p>

One of the original requirements for the Ariane 5 was the ability to lift the Hermes spaceplane. I don't think all of the design was implemented and some changes were made after Hermes was dropped, but the capability to add the man-rated elements is built into the system. <br /> Posted by Swampcat</DIV></p><p>It's quite interesting, and I also seem to remember either hearing or reading about some ESA plan, where the Ariane/ATV is fitted with an escape system for abort during ascent and also abort from orbit.</p><p>But it took 10 years to get to this point to get the first ATV up, so it's best not to hold one's breath and celebrate this accomplishment for now.&nbsp;</p><p>"It really flies".&nbsp;</p>
