It is a bit of a reflection on the mechanistic Astrophysics thinking that novas "explode". If it's not accreting or compressing it's colliding or exploding, are they all pyromaniac? When Hannes Alfven looked into the sky he saw 99.999% plasma. Plasma is an electrical phenomenon most of the time, although in Astrophysics only heat can cause it!!

So if a star is not a compressed gas nuclear bomb it could simply be an electrically driven plasma discharge. This explains many features such as sunspot cycles, novas, supernovas and black outs. Colour and luminosity are simply down to current density, as received from its galactic ISM.
