Actor and voiceover artist Peter Hawkins, born April 3 1924, passed away on July 8, 2006.

Peter Hawkins was the voice of the Daleks in Dr. Who, his metallic cries of "Ex-term-in-ate" imitated by millions of youngsters in the 1960s and 70s.

Hawkins also gave voice to some of TVs most memorable animated characters including Bill and Ben the Flowerpot Men and Captain Pugwash.

With fellow actor David Graham and a sound engineer, Hawkins developed the sinister staccato voice of the good Doctor's notorious adversary, the Daleks, coming up with the peculiar metallic tones by speaking through a ring modulator.

Hawkins also voiced the cult show's aggressive silver humanoids, the Cybermen.

Source - Herald Sun, Wed 2 Aug 2006, p69

He did them early on, anyway. The Cyber-actors eventually got to do their own voices, courtesy of vocoders built directly into the helmets. But the Daleks were always voiced-over by a voice artist.

Nowdays, both Cybermen and Daleks are voiced by uber-fan Nicholas Briggs, best known for privately producing a series of unauthorized fan videos and audios featuring a variety of popular Dr Who monsters.

Sad to hear that another Dr Who actor has passed beyond the veil, but hey, making it to 82 is not bad.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

Our household like so many others in the early 70s, resonated with young siblings imitating Davros and the Daleks.

Very sad, as when Ed Bishop died last year. One hates to think of people, who indirectly have a great influence on your younger life, dying.

Who is this superhero? Henry, the mild-mannered janitor ... could be!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bring Back The Black!
