For me there are one or two questionable choices on this list, such as Back to the Future. It was a great, really fun move but good science fiction? Not really. And also note, Star Wars is science fantasy, not science fiction. I love it (at least the first three movies), but it's not scifi.

Looking at all the lists produced over the years by Space.com. I can only assume none of the people writing here have even seen the movie Silent Running with Bruce Dern.

That movie is great science fiction, emphasis on the science. It's about saving the planet, and the forests, using space technology to do so. Humanity and human choices and how far a human will go to back his principles. I don't want to give anything away for anyone who has not watched but it is an excellent movie, and while not "exciting" (Pow, Bang, Zap) it is definitely better science fiction than some of the movies on this list.
