Can any body tell me if anybody received Nobel prize for research on boson?

Yes; the 1999 Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded "for elucidating the quantum structure of electroweak interactions in physics" which is directly related to Higgs Boson reaearch. I suspect that the direct observation of the Higgs Boson will result in another Nobel Prize, although Peter Higgs himself is no longer an active physics researcher.

BTW -- Higgs kind of screwed himself as far as a Nobel Prize goes because of an unfortunate perceived slight he made about Stephen Hawking -- which was taken totally out of context and blown completely out of proportion...

funny thing is, Higgs apparently isn't to fond of the idea of the higgs field.

And..what slight?

--------------------SaiphMOD@gmail.com -------------------

"This is my Timey Wimey Detector. Goes "bing" when there's stuff. It also fries eggs at 30 paces, wether you want it to or not actually. I've learned to stay away from hens: It's not pretty when they blow" -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

"And..what slight?"

Higgs hit the headlines in September 2002 when an article headlined "Clash of the atom-smashing academics" appeared in the Scotsman newspaper. The story concerned remarks that Higgs made about Stephen Hawking to a journalist over dinner. Higgs was reported to have said, among other things, that Hawking's celebrity status has given him undeserved instant credibility, and that communication between Hawking and theorists in other fields was difficult. The story, which was picked up by other newspapers, also reported how Hawking had won a bet that the Higgs boson would not be found at the Large Electron Positron collider at CERN.

Higgs quickly wrote to Hawking explaining the context in which he made the remarks and Hawking wrote back saying that he was not offended - but adding that he still thought that experimentalists would not find the Higgs boson.

(Copied from the web.)

Related Link, from a 2002 article.

Thanks for the scoop.

well, higgs was right. The public does tend to treat anything hawking says as an absolute, and I'm sure that leaks over into professional work as well.

Yes Alokmohan
Several Nobel Prizes were given to several personalities on their work on the boson.

Yes it is sad that Satyendra Nath was never recognized with that honor. Nobel Prizes is in many respects a political prize. During the time he was making the Bose-Einstein statistics you know what was the political situation of India.

But do not worry because his name will never ceise to exist through the Boson and no one will remember the other names.

SEARCH thank you.At that time Einstein himself found difficulty in getting a berth as he was not in the hobby of lobbying around and he was a jew.India was underBritish rule then.

Oh, there are several well-known and very respected Physicists and Mathematicians from India. The above mentioned two, and of course Srinivasa Ramanujan (as well as a long list of others, less well known to the general public).

And of course, lest we forget (although he wan't born there, he is of Indian descent), Subramayan Chandrasekhar.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."
