Wonder if after Challenger tragedy if NASA could not have modified shuttle fuel tank insulation to prevent foam shedding. Or in Colombia, could an alternative reentry trajectory (keep bottom of shuttle facing reentry plasma longer) have saved crew? Could still be modeled. Learn.

I am glad, that NASA "Safety First!" the newly developed culture after the two shuttle disasters overrode the "The Hell with it, maybe it will work, let's try it" culture of Boeing,. By the way, I think thatit is a McDonnell Douglas Company attitude, that ruined Boeing, since all the very good Boeing people already left the company over a two decades ago. The Boeing name had been dragged deep into the mud by the McDonnell management.

Did not know that about the McD migration into Boeing. Was going to joke that McD burger flippers not qualified to build boosters but will not pile on. What is missing in US space companies that SpaceX has is audacity...missing since Apollo and eroded during shuttle program. Dream big and you find a way to make things happen. Count beans and you gorge on federal contracts.

McDonnell Douglas Co. purchased Boeing Co in 1997, and the McDonnel CEO and managers took over the combined company. Most of the Boeing engineers, workers left the company within the first 2-3 years, as the new managers did not care about quality as much as the quarterly profits that became the most important goal.

Where did the Boeing engineers go to?
