Are what point, considering WX concerns at KSC and EDW and freezing/dust concerns at NOR are other sites considered?

ie, AMA (Amarillo-Rick Husband), DFW (Dallas/Fort Worth International), DYS (Dyess AFB, Abilene), etc ...

and what would an NOR return (as well as the other three Texas sites mentioned) do to the "flight over populated areas" concerns post-Columbia?

obviously DIA (Denver) is out of the question ;-)

Or ... would a temporary return to ISS (a day or two) allow the Shuttle to extend it's on-orbit life a bit and allow for improvement in wx conditions at either EDW or KSC

"...would a temporary return to ISS..."

Can't answer the first, but no to this. The reactants for the fuel cells are running out. The ISS can't help out at this point. The mod coming up (forget the acronym) that allows the Shuttle to pull power from the ISS will help extend the on-orbit life of the orbiter *before* this point (i.e. while docked, orbiters will be able to pull some of their power from the ISS arrays and reduce use of reactants), but it can't help once the reactants are already low (i.e. it can neither supply the full power needed by the orbiter nor are the orbiter fuel cells regenerative).

Once the fuel cells are out of reactants, the orbiters are large black & white oddly-shaped bricks.

thats what I thought but I wasn't sure if it was, indeed, the fuel cells that were at issue.

what would be the food/water situation during a "safe harbor" operation at ISS?

Would the new "autoland" (aka radio controlled gear switch) be used in such a situation or would they just ditch it?

I would assume (and it's my wisdom so buyer beware) thatany scheduled launch would result in severe delays in the remaining schedule ... at that point you'd have one Shuttle out of sequence (the rescue flight) and possible loss of one Orbiter.

Yes, no, or did I miss your point?

In response to:

Poster: shuttle_guy
Subject: ISS - food/water during safe harbor Re: contingency sites

There are enough comsumables on the ISS to keep all 10 crewmen alive for 2 or 3 months. The Shuttle which is the Launch On Need (LON) vehicle is in a state of readiness to be able to launch before the consumables on the ISS are depleted otherwise the primary Shuttle launch is delayed until the LON vehicle launch date is acceptable.

so at what point (on Saturday) does NASA abandon (ok, strong term) attempts at KSC, EDW, NOR and look to another contigency site? And is there a list of preference at that point?

If it ever got to that point, I suspect the preference is terra firma in any way, shape, or form.
I don't know the real checkdown list, let's just hope it never gets to that!

But the Krell forgot one thing John. If they landed at DIA, they'd skid all the way to Edwards

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Wayne ... yeah DIA is a mess .... from the other thread another thought re: landing popped into my head but I figured I'd move it over here instead of the "main" thread ...

so what *if* following deorbit burn and hence, committment to KSC, a thunderstorm *did* come up?

What *would* happen to a Shuttle landing in rain?

Obviously not the best situation but I cannot imagine instantaneous horror, either.

Florida wx being what it is ... would it be possible for a Shuttle to switch to either Orlando or Tampa if such a storm did pop up?
I don't know, so I will let those with more expertise answer the main part of your question.
I did hear that the shuttle can land an a very damp runway, but "wet" is messy if it gets to the point where you can hydroplane with a brick that weighs a bazillion tons.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. georgeniebling,

I am not sure, but I believe that the primary constraint is runway length. There are few civilian airports with runways over 10,000 feet, and the shuttle uses about that much once it has touched down, if I recall correctly.
The secret to peace of mind is a short attention span.

wrong direction,
they are moving west to east
hitting denver oops, landing in denver would mean they would continue sliding east.

They do have a long 15,000 runway. I don't know if it clear of snow.
BTW
I am in Fort Collins, 60 miles north enjoying two feet of snow and drifts that are feet higher than that.
All a moot point, thankfully.

Actually their landing direction on the runway, as with all aircraft, is into the headwind, so whatever way they're heading, they will turn and land upwind, just as they did at KSC.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Thanx for that info. newsartist,

yep ... I knew Dyess was on the list ...

I know Amarillo/Rick Husband used to be on the list and thought at some point that DFW International was ...

g
s_g,

of course the preference is always KSC, EDW, NOR ... but what after that ... which fourth is the "best" fourth?
