Is it possible that you can control the hubble with your comoputer? I'm not sure if it is a program or an online site. I herd somewhere that you could control one of the sattalites in space I'm not sure if it was the hubble or not but for a little while it would allow you to view space. If anyone has anything on this any further it would help thanks.

I think the government would send an F-16 to blow up your house if you succeeded in hacking into the Hubble flight operations system.

{funny if somebody did, though . . . . }

TPTB went to Dallas and all I got was Plucked !!

So many people, so few recipes !!

Let's clean up this stinkhole !!

Can't you request a target for MOC on MGS somewhere? Is that what you're thinking of?

I wish I could remember
But my selective memory
Won't let me - Mark Oliver Everett

I'm not sure what it was exactly I've never done it in fear of guys in a black suit and red tie coming to my door so I was just asking. And If they wanted to their could be a program to contro lthe amout of time someone can log onto the cam because my college has that function on theirs/

To be honest, the Hubble time is booked well in advance in almost all cases. If an extremely unusual or unique opportunity arises, I believe thay will make an adjustment.
Most proposals for dedicated time are reserved months or tears in advance, IIRC.
I'll try and find a reference.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Thats correct, Hubble time is very valuable and astronomers sometimes wait years for small amounts of Hubble time. AFAIK, there is no way for folks outside the STSI (Or wherever Hubble mission operations are controlled) to control Hubble with a personal computer.

There is probably more info at the Space Telescope Science Institute (SCSI).

http://www.stsci.edu/resources/

My borrowed quote for the time being:

There are three kinds of people in life. STScI - Space Telescope Science Institute.

Even the target of opportunity time - e.g., supernovae, comets - are requested in advance! (This is done by submitting a proposal that says I want TBD hours on TBD instrument to observe 1-2 supernova if they are discovered this observing cyle and meet the following criteria...).

Thats what I figured. Not just anyone has access to HST, especially through a PC.

My borrowed quote for the time being:

There are three kinds of people in life. I didn't know that you had to reserve time in advance for unforseen events. Of course, it makes sense if you think about it.
Thanx

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Monsters. For something like a supernova in which case you would have very little time to get the whole thing. I suspect the STSI has staff that points the telescope and begins preliminary data recording at priority transient targets as rapidly as possible.

"erioladastra" can probably confirm and better explain who they do handle a priority situation.

My borrowed quote for the time being:

There are three kinds of people in life.
Well the observing schedules are built a week at a time. If a target of opportunity (TOO) appears they have to build a new schedule, check it and uplink it. They have gotten pretty good at quick turn around but there is still a delay as word spreads that there is something to look at, confirm it and then "pull the trigger" on invoking your prescious TOO time. You would really hate to start this off and then go "ooops, the guy on teh mountain saw an Iridium flare!". I think 24-48 hours would be the minimu which is not great if you are looking at supernovae, but better than the alternative. The operators can't just turn off the pre programmed schedule and point it. Does that help?
