I feel like you are underestimating the value of not having to pay monthly for the software. I would love to use photoshop, but I cannot justify the cost as an amateur. But PSP can do SO MUCH of what PS can do without the ongoing cost. And it is on a Humble Bundle right now with Painter and several other programs plus brushes for $30.

That's just impossible to beat.

And yes, I know GIMP is free. It has been a while since I used GIMP and it was a ton of little modules when I did, so I did not feel comfortable with it. But perhaps it has improved.

It is definitely a choice for someone looking for a free and capable program.

But I've been using PSP since version 7 I believe, before Corel got a hold of it.

It isn't perfect, but it is VERY capable of doing most everything an amateur or semi-pro photographer (including editing RAW) user might need and dirt cheap. I find that I don't need to update but every few years, so it ends up being WAY CHEAPER than Adobe. Just a different perspective and data point for you.
