A simple CTV design.

It should be possible to create a 9 ton class CTV which is re-usable and can be flown on a Delta IV medium rocket without GEM60 SRBs. The increased LEO throw weight is achieved by using an RL-60 upperstage engine in lieu of the RL-10B2 and improving the efficiency of the RS-68 by means of an extensible nozzle which drops in place in mid flight. With these improvements the LEO capacity of the Delta IV medium should be between 11 and 13 tons, so there will be thrust to spare.

The objectives are:-

(1) Provide the means of transporting up to 4 astronauts and/or limited supplies to the ISS or a separately launched deep space CEV.

(2) Use as simple and as economical a launch system as possible; one 1st stage and one upper stage engines.

(3) Avoid completely the use of solid boosters in the ascent flight.

(4) Integrate a solid rocket de-orbit system which doubles as the launch escape thrusters for the CTV.

(5) Make the CTV maneuverable after re-entry for more precise landing site determination; using aerodynamic spoilers for braking & maneuvering, and a parasail for final approach and touch down.

(6) Make the CTV reusable.

Here's a link to the picture in case the attached one is not available.
