How about, instead of looking for one signature from one uncommonly-captured phenomenon indicating one class of conjectured DM, they start rounding up every recorded, and being recorded, anomaly—Halton Arp (or Charles Fort) style—and ask what hypotheses and theories could account for its/their departure from the Standard Model?
