Did Star Trek change hands officially?

All the books that I have read lately have CBS Properties as the copyright owner. Also, no where in the book does it say Paramount or show its logo. Instead, CBS is used everywhere.

Will Pittenger
Add this user box to your Wikipedia User Page to show your support for the SDC forums:
{{User:Will Pittenger/User Boxes/Space.com Account}}

Star Trek was originally owned by Desilu [Desi Arnez & Lucille Ball's production co.], and then was sold to Gulf+Western, which became Paramount, which was bought by CBS.

Mr. Pittenger.

And you call yourself a Trek fan? How could you not know about the re-mastering?

I think that remastering of the Doomsday Machine really lends to the story line. Decker being hysterical is a little more believeable.
Actually, I think it was "Paramount" that bought Desilu just before Star Trek TOS went on the air. By the time the first movie was made, Gulf+Western bought Paramount. They later sold that to someone. Wikipedia's Paramount article has Paramount founded in 1912. Viacom then bought Paramount for $10 billion.

Will Pittenger
Add this user box to your Wikipedia User Page to show your support for the SDC forums:
{{User:Will Pittenger/User Boxes/Space.com Account}}

Desilu owned the rights to a lot of series from the 50s and 60s. They had initially sold off their pre-1960s series to CBS, but kept the others. At the time, syndication rights for series were not a big consideration. This is why Desi Arnez was able to garner syndication rights for a song.

Lucille Ball headed the company [Desilu] in the late 60s, and sold Star Trek to Gulf+Western. At the time, Gulf+Western was considered the top model for a growing modern American company. They had grown thru acquisition, including the acquisition of Paramount. Paramount, on the other hand, like many of the contemporary studios was in financial straights - and so could not afford the purchase of Star Trek outright. Gulf+Western merged Desilu and Paramount into one organization, including the Star Trek rights. Paramount would eventually make a comeback of sorts with Robert Evans at the helm and with commercial hits like Rosemary's Baby and The Godfather.
Tell me if you think this is ironic.

In the 1960's, Desilu tried to sell Star Trek to CBS. When they rejected it in favor of Lost in Space, Roddenberry was mad they they used their "interest in Star Trek" only to make Lost in Space better. At the time, CBS was uninterested in Star Trek. So NBC got Star Trek.

Now, over 40 years later, CBS owns everything.

Will Pittenger
Add this user box to your Wikipedia User Page to show your support for the SDC forums:
{{User:Will Pittenger/User Boxes/Space.com Account}}
