New research suggests that Venus may never have possessed liquid water oceans. That would mean "Earth's evil twin" was always hostile to life.

A number of space probes have indicated the presence of granite in the mountains of Venus. Since granite can only form in the presence of water, I am sticking with what is the most rationale history. That Venus had oceans and lost them when its mag field was lost :

Quick research shows last successful landing on Venus was 1985 (Vega 1/2).
Would be nice to have a recent landing with upgraded technology and photography.
Some of these space programs feel like were moving backwards. - why couldn't the Davinci probe be fitted to land? I can only assume the drop is intended over an area with no flat terrain.

We will have to wait and see what the VERITAS mission tells us.

It should provide a better notion of the composition of surface features over previous spacecraft.
