Earth 1

I watched a documentary while back about the moon, its effects that it has on the earth, theories about how it was created, ect. In the show it mentioned that there was 2 phases of earth as explained in the "proto-planet" collision theory that created the moon. the second phase is what we have now, but the first phase was a earth covered entirely with water and perhaps life that was more advanced then just single cell structures. I was curious to know if anyone knows where I can get information about the earth 1 theory. I’ve looked in wiki but the only thing that came up was Marvel comics <img src="/images/icons/tongue.gif" />.
