I'm doing research for a sci-fi novel that is going to require reuseable spacecraft. I came across this proposal called ROMBUS, that was an SSTO (not counting drop tanks) that could put 450 tons into LEO. I'm perfectly happy to push the envelope, but that much mass seems fantastical.
The proposal is from the 60's, and with the advances in materials and electronics, if they thought they could pull it off then, it should at least be theoretically possible in the near future. Is this design feasible? A reuseable 450 ton payload launch vehicle?
