i herd my sceince teacher said in passing before that u need to learn a foriegn language to be a astronout is this true? <br /><br />couldnt get the full lowdown on it cuz she went on maternaty leave before xmas break. and the substitute sceince teacher dont know much bout sceince. dont even think hes fit to teach cuz all he do is stare at the gurls and the guys that look like gurls.<br /><br />why a foreing language? i understand that u would work with sceintists from other counties but dont they speak english already? and dont think it matters what language u speak on the moon.

I'm tempted to say that you should probably master the English language before you try and tackle a foreign language, but that's a little too obvious. <img src="/images/icons/rolleyes.gif" /> <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> <strong><font color="#3366ff">Made weak by time and fate, but strong in will to strive, to seek, to find and not to yeild.</font> - <font color="#3366ff"><em>Tennyson</em></font></strong> </div>

Why? Simple: virtually all Undergraduate degree programs in the US require you to take 4 semesters of a foreign language (I took French - and promptly lost 99% of it once done, but that's another story).<br /><br />Start now. It's easier when you're young. <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> <p><em>Differential Diagnosis:  </em>"<strong><em>I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are</em></strong>."<br /> </p> </div>

Hard to say. I was recommended to take French, as the French are also world-players in the fields my majors covered. German is also useful. <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> <p><em>Differential Diagnosis:  </em>"<strong><em>I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are</em></strong>."<br /> </p> </div>

Nations which has manned spacecraft are USA, Russia and China.<br />You should learn Russian or Chinese languase.<br />I feel bitter abount Japan doesn't have manned spacecraft. <img src="/images/icons/frown.gif" /><br /><br />To put it bluntly, You need not learn foreign language because you can use Engish.<br />

If I were learning a second language right now and had free choice, it would be Mandarin. Pretty much a no brainer. <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> <p>The Disenfranchised Curmudgeon</p><p>http://tonyplank.blogspot.com/ </p> </div>

Honestly, I don't think it will make or break you by choosing one or another. The important thing is that you learn a foreign language (or more than one if you can). Personally, when I think about major space pioneers past, present, and future, I think of Russia (other than the US) but I am no expert. What I would do would be to find someone you know or at your school who knows a foreign language and would be willing to help you learn it and start with that one. If not, see if you can find someone who is interested in learning the same language as you so that you have someone to study with and someone who you can practice with.

Is it me or you're deliberately mistyping your words. If not, then you might want to add some spelling classes and proper punctuation with those Foreign Language classes.

To learn a foreign language properly it is better to understand your own language first and to use it well, you'll see how much easier it gets for you to grasp other grammar structures.

I think he is saying that mandarin is a, relatively, easy language to learn. I agree that grammatcally is one of the easiest languages but I wouldn't consider writing and speaking it properly a "no brainer".

to poster kawboi or Mr Plank is mandarin the same as the chinese language some here r recomending me?<br />

Yes, mandarin is basically what people refer as chinese, although there are several different dialects like cantonese. Mandarin is, by far, the most used one though.

German is not tough for English speakers either. Both languages are from the same family (Germanic) so there's a lot of similarities.<br />

That's until you start messing with <i>dativ, akkusativ, genitiv</i> and the feminin, masculine and neutral articles and all their variations <img src="/images/icons/tongue.gif" />
