Green fireball

Well it scared me at first. I mean if you can imagine a really big(it was a little smaller than the moon), green looking rock in the middle of the sky, it was something I won't soon forget. Does that sound like a bolide??? <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> </div>

<font color="yellow"> When you say as bright as the moon, do you mean as big as well(obviously not when the moon is gigantic, but on a normal night) I ask because one time camping I saw something, I guess it was a meteor, but it was preety big, bright green, and only lasted for a second, but I would say it looked about as big as the moon that night. I only saw that 3 times, and every time it was hard to judge of the size because of the speed of the meteor and of the brightness of it, which was almost blinding (a bit like looking straight at a torch after a few hours in total dark, though this image may be a little strong <img src="/images/icons/smile.gif" /> ). But every time, it made a nice queue which was visible for at least 5 to 10 seconds.

Right, but it wasn't a line streaking across the sky, it looked like it was coming in my general direction. This is one of two times, were it looked as if the rock was coming right at me.The green one I saw though was much larger than the first one.<br /> <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> </div>

It is quite possible. Some meteors enter with a very high angle in the atmosphere, making them look like if they came straight at you. Of course, the high angle makes more frictions, meaning more brilliant meteors, and a greater possibility of an "explosion" at the end of its course.<br />Never seen one like this till now, though.

But you would be able to see them very clearly correct? On the second occasion I could clearly see dents,or holes on the rock.Just imagine the moon when its probably about the size of a golf ball from your perspective thats what it looked like, but green.The first time it was during the day, so all I could see was a grey spot in the sky with orange around it. I guess what I'm trying to say is that it wasn't a streak in the sky.The first time I was able to watch the object for sometime.The second time was a way better show, but last about 2 seconds or so. Does this sound like what you saw?Or is this a rare sight.Definitely one of the most spectacular things I've ever seen. <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> </div>

Well, don't think I've ever seen things like that. But meteors can be pretty spectacular.<br />Given the kickness of your sighting, I'd say you've seen a meteor, but maybe it was something else, like a piece of probe or rocket entering the atmosphere. If it was that, it must have been quite a show indeed!

This is comet Holmes, which is just over our heads right now.<br />If you saw something looking like that entering high speed in the atmosphere, I'm pretty sure it was a very big meteor. But meteors like that happen very rarely. I quite envy you right now <img src="/images/icons/smile.gif" />

Ya it was like nothing I've seen before.Very big, but I wish it would have lasted longer. But if its as rare a sight as you say it is, I'm pretty happy with my 2 second peek <img src="/images/icons/smile.gif" /> <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> </div>
