Hawker Siddeley 1960's STS?

In Volume 59 Supplement 2, 2006 of BIS’s Space Chronicles – UK Spaceplanes, there is mention on Page 107 of a R. H Francis from Hawker Siddeley presenting a paper<br /><br /> ‘believed to be in Virginia around the late 1960’s, where he showed a configuration identical to that of the US Space Shuttle, i.e., a winged, returnable Orbiter, two solid parachute recoverable SRBs and the expendable fuel tank.’<br /><br />Does anyone have any other information on this – expected size, weights etc?<br /> <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> </div>

It could be that british first created space shuttle design as I remember in the british movie "Moonraker" there were space shuttles identical to american ones and that was two years before the first shuttle launch! <img src="/images/icons/smile.gif" /> <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> <div style="text-align:center"><font style="color:#808080" color="#999999"><font size="1">"I predict that within 100 years computers will be twice as powerful, 10000 times larger, and so expensive that only the five richest kings of Europe will own them"</font></font><br /></div> </div>

Moonraker was a US movie and is was based on the US shuttle. The US shuttle was in development long before the movie was written. Also look in the movie credits, Rockwell International, the shuttle builder, was a technical advisor

UK spaceplanes is the definitive book on the subject at present. Theres also an incredible book about the shuttle written here in the U.S. that has just about every concept that was proposed and goes back to the days of the X-15, Walter Dornberger etc. I have to get the title and author and post that info later.<br /><br />One UK concept that comes to mind in this book was MUSTARD, another was the HOTOL. <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> <p><strong>My borrowed quote for the time being:</strong></p><p><em>There are three kinds of people in life. Pity, it would be interesting to see what the requirements were that led to the design being as it was and how close it was to the US shuttle - somehow i cant see the MoD demanding what the US DoD did. <div class="Discussion_UserSignature"> </div>
