Hi,

My name is Lori, and I'm new here. I have a big question. I know this may sound silly, but there is a rumor that a Russian Astronomer named Nikolai Fedorovsky, has found a comet that just may collide with the earth, by the end of the month.

Would you not be seeing something like this approaching the earth by now if it truly was approaching?

Has anyone else seen this so called comet?

I get tired of sudo scientist claiming this.

Is there any proof of this one if there is one?

Thank you

Lori

Lori, welcome to SDC!
Interesting question. I have heard nothing about such an event, and I'm sure we all would have.
Do you know the source of the rumor, so we can investigate?

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Every thing that I'm finding about this event is in the "quack" news. Right up there with the "Redneck Aliens take over Trailer Park"

Now there is a real event when Apophis passes close (5 Earth diameters) to Earth on April 13, 2029. If it manages to hit a keyhole of 610 meters, when it passes again 7 years later it might hit the Earth.

Apophis (2004 MN4) is an asteroid about 200km in diameter. It would cause some damage but it's not a planet killer. (see Nov 06 S&T for more)

www.siriuslookers.org

I haven't found anything.
Most links I ran across refer to Hale-Bopp, and that was years ago.
We'll just have to find out more details before we can search.
Or did you find something in the current time frame?

But the Krell forgot one thing John. apophis isn't that big. It is a about 400 m across.

And how did this russian manage to calculate the comets trajectory after he saw the killer comet one time? Is that possible?

Well the rumor she reported did not say how many times it was observed. So until we know more about the rumor, there's not much we can do to help her.

If she's really interested, she'll be back tomight or tomorrow.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. yep. I didn't find any sturdy information. Something on pravda (dont know what that is). He is apparently the only one who has seen the object. He seems kind of confident on the date. Nothing on the size yet.

And does who wrote this doesn't seem to know the difference between a comet and an asteroid.

Supposedly discovered in August.

Information on different sources doesn't match.
Pravda is THE russian newspaper.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Monsters. "Based on calculations of the object’s speed, this celestial body is at minimum an asteroid "

wrong. But probably meaning that it is bigger than 50m in diameter. Of course.

Hard to say. It is a very common name in astronomy clubs, newsletters, and piles of info.

Without more info, I can't guess.

As telfrow asked, do you have a link?

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Pravda used to be THE official paper of the USSR.
Not being from there, I can't say what it's current status is in the eyes of the people or government. I would suspect it's still the number 1 paper in russia, but have no way to know for sure.

Maybe I'll ask in Free Space, don't want to get too far off topic.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Why did you make "Armageddon"?. People in other countries might think it's scientific.

OK, now it's starting to come into clearer focus.

The Pravda article is mostly a fluff piece, other than the original claim. Which is unsubstantiated (no details at all other that it's gonna hit us by the end of the month.)
He seems to be saying more observations can help.
Every astronomer knows that the place to report such observations is the CBAT (Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams- a rather anachronistic name today ), and a report there will get the additional observations needed. I'll check there next.

I did a search on "Nikolai Fedorovsky" and found he traveled to Jonestown sometime before the whacko Jim Jones induced hundreds of people to kill themselves.
Not great credentials.
The second link had on the top a story about "The Great Red Comet". I'll check that out, there have been several woo-woo claims of comets that didn't exist over the last decade, so I'll see which one it was. Doesn't look like a credible site at first glance, but we'll see.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Well, I'll have to agree with the general consensus here. If a giant comet actually was on collision course with the Earth, especially within that sort of time frame, then it ought to have been substantiated by lots of other observatories. But so far I haven't seen anything besides this one report. My guess is it's a load of BS cooked up by someone who wanted lots of attention.

________________

Repent! Repent! It's like the shepard and the wolf -> the comet and the astronomer.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I kind of knew it was nut job all around.

Thanks Gene for the link. I'll check it out soon.

Sorry I'm so late coming back. Had to feed my husband and kids, before responding.

There are always rumors that people spread in order to cause a panic.

To me that is a form of terrorism.

God Bless
Lori

That's a serious wacko site.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. Monsters. Based on the other headlines on that same page, I'd have to say it's probably false. I find it hard to put much credibility to something that has headlines about werewolves on the same page. Looks more like a tabloid than a factual newspaper.

Rae
