".....We didn’t see anything until about 10,000 feet,” said Lindsey, a four-time shuttle flyer. “I’d never gone through weather like that on real shuttle landing but it’s not a big deal....."

The above is an extract from the following link
http://www.space.com/missionlaunches/060717_sts121_crewresponse.html

does the above statement, from the commander about landing, mean that the shuttle was flying on remote control?

thanks for any clarification.

if you mean the reference to the 'real shuttle landing', he probably meant you get visibility like that on trenagers but not during real flights

vanDivX

Thanks both of you,

did Divx mean 'like during in training, in shuttle simulator'?

yeah, I can confirm it

I am not sure if 'trenager' is really English word or if the spelling is right, better term to use is flight training 'simulator' I suppose

I am not any expert on these things but it seems the shuttle pilots are doing so much traning in simulators, especially now that they've been grounded for so long, that one day a pilot will fail to realize he is flying for real now and abort the mission in mid flight and ask for repeat of the simulator test LOL

vanDivX

It was a great return. Whilst I have doubts about the ISS, I do think that the Shuttle is worth continuing, particularly as the shuttle has proven to be a good research facility in her own right (Spacelab, Earth Observations, Microgravity, space based Astronomy, etc).

Lets hope that Atlantis will perform just as well, for the next mission. A return to Hubble must be done soon as well.

"I suddenly noticed an anomaly to the left of Io, just off the rim of that world.
