Great observation, made possible by more sensitive instruments that see "cool" stars! I

t isn't a slam dunk since they can't pin down surface vs core cooling. But notably (in my opinion) similar statistical work on EoS has found a preference for exotic "quark-gluon" cores that are remaining after this work as fast Urca - heat robbing by neutrino emission - cooling states.
