Warner Bros' I Am Legend opens closer to $80 million than the studio's hoped-for $50 million from Friday through Sunday after making a whopping $29.6 million Friday in 3,606 theaters for first place. This more than demonstrates that Will Smith is now the biggest U.S. box office stud bar none and breaks his previous opening record (I Robot's $62 mil in summer). This also will easily be the biggest December movie opening ever.

Not only did I Am Legend soar past the numbers for King Kong's and Narnia's December debuts, but it looks likely to pass all three of the Lord Of the Rings trilogy's Christmas-timed openings as well, including Return Of The King's record-setting $72.6 mil.) The humongous hit is a badly needed life preserver for Warner Bros' drowning movie division, which I'm told didn't even have time to do a research screening on the film since it came in so late.
/>

Can't wait to hear your views on it. I recently saw the original adaptation with Vincent Price, which was relatively close to the book.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0058700/

I am looking forward to see what change (if any) they have made to Will Smith's record smashing blockbuster version.

I saw it on Friday...
It was good, slightly like 28 Days Later (One of my favorite movies though)...
The one problem I had was the appearance of the dark seekers...
Very CGI, Very Obvious...

Other than that, great movie...
In the event of a full scale nuclear war or NEO impact event, there are two categories of underground shelters available to the public, distinguished by depth underground: bunkers and graves...

Ah, well that IS a problem.

I reluctantly took my girlfriend to 28 days. She decided she was scared as soon as it got to him walking into the church and calling out, I turned and said "We can go if you like" she made a motion I chose to interpret as a affirmative nod

*Doors to theatre go "BANG clunk clunk clunk" and she is still finishing the nod*

Tiggers don't like scary horror movies. She was REALLY REALLY angry with her soft toy man, because she was suddenly alone, groping about in the dark for her handbag, and apparently that was the cue for some horrible Zombies to begin running around, I don't know, I didn't see them. She didn't like me for a few days.

So maybe if this is scary, i shan't go after all. The book WASN'T scary i thought.

>It was good, slightly like 28 Days Later (One of my favorite movies though)... <

And of course the "28" movies are highly derivative of the novels "Day Of the Triffids" (1951), "I Am Legend" (1954) and George Romero's "Dead" trilogy and his "Crazies" (1973).

I haven't seen it yet, but I am very disappointed that the "vampires" ("dark seekers in the movie") apparently don't speak. The whole point of the novel--the ironic "twist" if you will--was that at the end Neville realizes that the "vampires", who are the majority now, consider themselves to be the true humans and consider Neville, the lone, vampire killing maniac, to be the monster. Hence the title.

I wonder how much, if any at all, Matheson was inspired by Mary Shelley's novel The Last Man ? FWIW it appears that there's to be a film in 2008 based on this book. In a blog about the film, I am Legend (the film) is mentioned. Two different movies with a semi-similar plot device coming out in the same time frame (kinda like Armageddon and Deep Impact ).

I intend to see the flick, perhaps after X-mas, so I'll report back when I do.

-----------------------------------------------------

Ask not what your Forum Software can do do on you,

Ask it to, please for the love of all that's Holy, STOP !

I have yet to see it unfortunately, but I hear it is far more depressing and pessimistic, so I actually think its going to be better, as I hate the cliche of a happy ending...
In the event of a full scale nuclear war or NEO impact event, there are two categories of underground shelters available to the public, distinguished by depth underground: bunkers and graves...

Hmm.

As a joke now,I was going to make a cyber comparison to Kiwis not being ABLE to fly, but WILLING to swim, and the MALE of the species being very prone to sitting on other peoples eggs for them . . . but the metaphor got confus'ed.

(All this sun mate, makes my one beer a night act like it is hiding something potent!)

I thought it was poorly edited and left me feeling like large chunks of the movie were missing. Ending was also disappointingly typical and somewhat rushed. Wil Smith was fine and there were some nice FX and action sequences.

Saw it this weekend. thought it was pretty good. Probably would've been very good if I hadn't read the novel or seen "Omega Man"

BTW: my 21 y/o daughter screamed at least a dozen times during the movie.

I guess, your level of enjoyment depended on the expectations you had going in. I tried not to judge it compared to "Omega Man" and the novel. But, it did seem a bit rushed and the ending was "cliche`"

It's funny, but the scenes of NYC after the virus was awesome and very realistic.

While the deers, lions, and the infected were some of the most fake looking things ever.

10+ years after Jurassic Park, NO EXCUSES!

Bad decision by the director to go for CGI instead of uh people wearing rubber.

I kept waiting for him to scream "My Precious!!" at Will Smith.

WARNING *******SPOILERS ******WARNING

I just watched I Am Legend last night.

I must admit for most of the movie, I was thinking 'OK this departs from the book, but it is not too bad'. After all, it is a relatively short story, and why not make variations on a theme. The cgi was mediocre, but Will Smith put in a pretty good performance and it was not comical as I had earlier feared.

However, the last five minutes ruined it for me.

As the key point has already been discussed here, I do not mind adding to the spoiler.

The whole point of I Am Legend is that humanity has changed and Robert Neville is the last of the original men. Dracula was a feared legend. He crept round at night killing people and creating terror. Robert Neville goes on about his business without thinking too much about it. He mehodically massacres the infected people during each day. A semblance of a society is begins to emerge among the infected and they lay a clever trap for him, like medieval stories where they need to slay the dragon. And so on. I Am Legend is his realisation that he is now a legend, and an evil one, as dracula was. Humans go about their daily lives without looking too deeply or realising that they may be contributing to an evil - of course we can't make films with this theme in today's society can we?

What is wrong with Hollywood? They twisted the main point of the book. They inserted a pseudo-religious element. It is God's will and he works in mysterious ways. There are survivors and Robert Neville is a Legend because he gave his life to save humanity. They did the same with the remake of Planet of the Apes - 'oh! its a parallel universe' - no great critique of how monstrous and agressive and selfish humans can be.

Does Hollywood now only cater to blue pill people? (to borrow from the Matrix). Are we so many sheep content to graze on hamburgers and cheap electrical goods accepting the my
