Image Poating Policy

We have decided on a policy for images that should satisfy everyone.

1. Ordinary threads. There will be a limit of 800 pixels wide. There will be no vertical limit. Of course the 100k files size limit is still in force. This will allow the easy reading of dialog posted on the thread. Moderators do not always have time to check the file size on every image, so please observe the 800 pixel limit on regular threads.

2. Image threads. These are threads specifically for posting images. These threads will be identified as Image threads in the title, such as Images of Saturn and its Moons . For now, there will be no width limit on Image threads.

A hint for dialog on Image Threads. If you are going to post a long message, use a manual carriage return at the end of each line of about 90 characters. This will keep your message within the limits of the window and make it easier for others to read. Do this even if there are no wide images in the thread because someone may post one later on.

Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men, the Shadow knows.

Works for me.

My borrowed quote for the time being:

There are three kinds of people in life. Those who make it happen, those who watch it happen...and those who do not know what happened.

Firefox is allowing the text column to be ~1300 pixels wide in this thread for me. I just measured it with CoolRuler.

Will Pittenger
Add this user box to your Wikipedia User Page to show your support for the SDC forums:
{{User:Will Pittenger/User Boxes/Space.com Account}}

It all depends on your screen resolution. If a person is set to 800x960 or somesuch, they definitely won't have 1300 pixels available.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

lol. I heard they overclocked it to 10.33 Hz!

Seriously, what's with SDC's totally antiquated design? It's so not 'future.'

My point was that unlike some forum systems (vBulletin), yours does not impose a max width on the post via CSS. I have seen posts with text going past the edge of the background image and becoming unreadable.

Will Pittenger
Add this user box to your Wikipedia User Page to show your support for the SDC forums:
{{User:Will Pittenger/User Boxes/Space.com Account}}

I have created an image using the autoshapes feature on microsoft word. I attempted to copy, paste it into my post but only the text shows up. How do I get my image in there?

"How do I get my image in there?"

Copy and paste won't work. You need to create an image file and save that. Then when you enter your post, just below the reply text box there is a checkbox and some words that say "I want to preview my post and/or attach a file." Enter whatever text you want, check the box, then click on the Continue button. On the Preview page, just below the preview of your post is a checkbox that allows you to browse for the image file on your computer. Click the Browse button, select your file, then click on the Continue button.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

"I hold it that a little rebellion now and then is a good thing, and as necessary in the political world as storms in the physical. Unsuccessful rebellions, indeed, generally establish the encroachments on the rights of the people which have produced them. An observation of this truth should render honest republican governors so mild in their punishment of rebellions as not to discourage them too much. It is a medicine necessary for the sound health of government."

Thomas Jefferson

So basically, you need a screenshot. You will need to select Word with your document visible and type Alt-PrintScreen. That will copy an image of Word with your document into the clipboard. From there, paste it into MSPaint and save it as PNG. (BMP files are huge. JPG are for photos and will not compress line art cleanly. GIFs are obsolete.)

Will Pittenger
Add this user box to your Wikipedia User Page to show your support for the SDC forums:
{{User:Will Pittenger/User Boxes/Space.com Account}}
