In a way, Space.com and the dark universe grew up together

"García Peñaloza explained that one alternative to the LCDM model is the wCDM model in which dark energy has a constant value, a cosmological equation of state parameter called "w," which represents the balance of the universe's pressure to its energy density."

I take this to mean that 'w' is a factor that might vary. If energy density increases then so does expansion speed caused by dark energy. I assume the energy density is the sea of virtual particles. I can guess that the rougher the sea then the more pressure on the harbour walls (which would move outwards if they could :);))

The obvious contender for increasing 'w' is a feeding black hole in another universe feeding its white hole - us from time to time. Maybe.
