Star Rigger.

John DeChancie. Had two sequels. Red Limit Freeway and ..... cannot remember the other. The first one was really cool.

The "little red car" was a 57 chevy.

Vote Libertarian

Actually, I'm trying to remember a book I read years ago by a famous sci-fi writer about his real experiences infiltrating a lower-east-side gang in the 1950s. I can't remember the name of the book or the author.

I definitely haven't read that book but Harlan Ellison comes to mind from your description alone. Don't know if he was writing that early...

I wish I could remember
But my selective memory
Won't let me - Mark Oliver Everett

It's weird isn't it that a description of a book I've never read can evoke a strong sense of who wrote it, just from the description!

I wish I could remember
But my selective memory
Won't let me - Mark Oliver Everett

Hey maybe someone might help me aswell. I've been looking forever for this story I read whilst in school. I read it in Swedish, but it might be a translation. Here goes:
The story begins on earth, just as families are packing their things to escape the dying earth. The spaceships breaks up and sets course for various believed to be habitable planets. The ship you get to follow ends up on a strange planet, with crystal-like grass, strange trees you only can chop down by heating the base of and most strange of all, some kind of moth like men that come to the lake which the colonists camp is situated. I would hope that someone could help me finding the name of this story for me, it would be much appreciated
/Z
