Hello. I'm about as newbie as you can get and I'm having a heck of a time finding good spots to simply gaze up at the stars. I've never realized how fenced off all the open areas are to the world.

Anyways, I'm curious if there is a list or something similiar for the best star gazing locations. I found the Clear Sky Clock, but it seems as if every spot listed there is either on private land or in the middle of the city which sorta makes it a moot point.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Try using the following tool:

http://www.darksky.org/darksky/

It will assist you in locating good viewing locations with a minimum of light-pollution.

Enjoy.

Differential Diagnosis: "I am both amused and annoyed that you think I should be less stubborn than you are."

What area of the world (country) are you in?

It might help hone our advice.

Have you looked for local astronomy clubs? That might be a good resource; they usually know where the dark spots are.

But the Krell forgot one thing John. I live in Globe, Arizona. Dark skies aren't to far away, but, like I said earlier, it's finding out how to really GET to them since it seems like most is private land.

I didn't want to "join" a club because I figured I wouldn't be able to attend meetings or contribute much, but I never considered simply asking them for help in finding good spots. Thanks for pointing out what should have been obvious

You don't have to join a club to go observing with them. (well mostly)

Since you are in Globe, EVAC observes in Florance Jct. area often. (Boyce Thompson Arboretum) (weather permitting)

I live in north Phoenix (I-17 & Happy Valley) but belong to the Sedona club (Sirius Lookers)

Another place to check is az observing Subscribing:
Send a message to az-observing-request@freelists.org with the
"Subject: subscribe". Or use this link:
az-observing-request@freelists.org?subject=subscribe

www.siriuslookers.org
