Hey all,

I noticed there was no post about this on this forum so I thought I'd relay the info.

Total lunar eclipse starting at 10:45 pm. Brazilian East Coast time must be 2 hours later than USA East Coast time. The Moon should be completely eclipsed around midnight, when it should turn a reddish color due to sunlight passing through the Earth's atmosphere (setting/rising sun color).

I'll be watching it from a beach in Bahia. Hope you can catch it and share the quasi planet-wide experience.

Cheers :)

“An error does not become a mistake until you refuse to correct it.” John F. Brilliant!

It's a fairly heavy overcast of clouds here in New Jersey, but, the moon still shows brightly through.
The eclipse starts at around 8:45 over here.(It's 7:58 now.)

"If it's planned, it's boring." - Freddie Mercury

The skies here cleared just in time. Great show.
"2012.. Year of the Dragon!! Get on the Dragon Wagon!".

Perfect viewing here in Montana right now, and since I have nearly zero light pollution it's even better.

Yeah, it was a splendid eclipse! The sky cleared out completely in about the middle of the whole thing, so, it was awesome.
But now the eclipsed moon is seemingly "frozen". It really hasn't changed at all from the time I last saw it.(Which was about an hour ago!!)

Anyway, I got some decent pictures of the eclipse in phases. This was my first real astrophotography venture, so, I hope they come out pretty nicely.

"If it's planned, it's boring." - Freddie Mercury

Nice Eclipse! I usually don't let myself get excited about them because of the near-certainty of clouds. And such was the forecast as of 24 hours ago. But I walk out of work this afternoon without a cloud in the sky! What a beautiful sight, I watched it go into totality thru binocs, too cool for school.

So . . . does anyone know, with any certainty . . . if Shackleton Crater saw the eclipse?

2885

Yep, I loved every moment of it!
With all of the good pictures I got out of Mom's cheesy camera, I think I can strap together a nice animation of the full eclipse with a bit of instruction from Dad.

Anyway, nope, I have no clue if it saw it or not. I was too intent on taking decent pictures. Sorry.

"If it's planned, it's boring." - Freddie Mercury

It was awesome here too. My first eclipse. Very slow but perfectly visible in an almost cloudless sky.

spacester: I am quite sure shackleton crater saw at least a partial eclipse of the sun as the earth's penumbra diameter is much larger than the Moon at that distance, and given that the Moon entered it almost dead on (I mean with the trajectory passing close to the center of the umbra), I would guess it is more than probable that shackleton went thru a bit if the umbra, as this is also larger than the Moon.

The sun was thus most probably eclipsed by the Earth as viewed from Shackleton crater.

“An error does not become a mistake until you refuse to correct it.” John F. When I was watching the eclipse some guy rode by me on a bicycle and then stopped and asked me, "Do you know what it is that's eclipsing the Moon like that?". I replied, "Uh... the Earth?" and then he said "Well, I guess it's on then." and then he rode off.

I don't know what all that was about.

There has been a thread about it in Ask the Astronomer for a week or two.

But the Krell forgot one thing John.
