Mars is an asteroid punching bag, NASA data reveals

Good question.

I would expect Mars to get more asteroid impacts because it is closer to the asteroid belt than Earth is. But, it would have been nice if the article had provided some comparative data on frequency of a spectrum of object sizes and the difference in the effectiveness of the Martian and Earth's atmosphere in burning them up before they reach the surface.

Lots of emphasis has been placed on the filtering effect of the outer planets. But that never made sense to me, it has an effect, but not a great one. The sentries nap. And not in position.

I thought numbers would show that. Or not show it. It wouldn't consider it to be a decisive indicator anyway. But still curious.

I think there is more natural space junk than we think, at least solar space junk. Only large area seems to protect us.
