What is going on with the moon? I haven't heard anything about an eclipse, or anything else that would cause this:

I read in recent news that there are going to be a lot of those moon illusions, where the moon looks really big, but this isn't what I'm referring to. I deliver pizzas in the evening, and noticed that as time went on this evening, the moon became more and more yellow, then orange. I could also see that this wasn't being caused by an eclipse, because it's not a full moon (I could see the shadow on one side). Anyone know of a logical explanation for this?

Yeah, it does that for the same reason sunsets are red.

--------------------SaiphMOD@gmail.com -------------------

"This is my Timey Wimey Detector. Goes "bing" when there's stuff. It also fries eggs at 30 paces, wether you want it to or not actually. I've learned to stay away from hens: It's not pretty when they blow" -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

In reply to:

Yeah, it does that for the same reason sunsets are red.

Yep. Technically speaking, what's happening is that light is being scattered by particles in the Earth's atmosphere, changing the color of the moon and reducing its brightness. If there's a lot of junk in the air (dust, haze, smog, volcanic debris) in the atmosphere, it'll turn the moon yellow or orange, sometimes quite dramatically. I've seen pumpkin-colored moons plenty of times. The effect will usually be more noticable near the horizon, because the moonlight has to go through a lot more air (and pollution) at that altitude.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

Ya its the haze and smoke in the air. Has the weather in your area been the same for a long time? No wind, sunny days, with no weather change stuff like smoke, smog, haze builds up in the air. Just last month I has 3 red moons in a row because we had sunny days for over 3 weeks.

gavinovz
