Why do our children and some adults dress up like Darth Vader or Mr. Spock and Captain Kirk when they could be living the dream of Apollo and trying on NASA spacesuits with a real shot at the moon!

Let's use our imaginations to fund and support science fact rather then making a few people rich with make believe fantasies.

I completely agree. With a renewed public interest in space exploration, there's no telling how much can be done.

Sorry reedyreed, the moon project should bite the dust, as far as I'm concerned. Think BIG(ger)! The next century of time and resources for the Western democracies should be spent towards making the planet Mars habitable, and then to declare the entire planet as our own. And to literally change the world in doing so. BECAUSE WE ARE BETTER THAN THEY ARE, and it is about time the rest of the world got it through their thick heads!

The moon projects I've heard about are small potatoes compared to all that can be realized by focusing on Mars. Think about it.
Stay focused. Go slow. Keep it simple.

Thanks for the enlightenment Mr. Ceaser Augustus, Genghis, Napoleon, Lord, Baron von, Herr Pion of Society. Go counsel some of those kindergarteners about how to be nice, and stay away from the big boys. Did you hear the door slamming behind you Mr. Atomic?
Stay focused. Go slow. "Corporate America has little in the way of vision and new ideas.........They tend to jump on the bandwagon and bleed it dry."

Such is the nature of Corporate.

"We were on that path during the decade of the sixties when we were living the challenges of the NEW FRONTIER. i had the priveledge of speaking breifly with Buzz Aldrin at the Moon to Mars meeting in Atlanta and asked him about the cyclers after mentioning my support for solar thermal rockets. He said something to the effect that it was you thermal guys who want a faster direct trip to Mars that have sidelined that idea. Sadly, I didn't get a chance to tell him that I see thermal options as a great way to power the "sprint" vehicles that would rendevous with the cyclers.
As for the Moon, although I wholeheartedly agree that asteroid mining is the way to go, a terraforming scheme for Mars could utilize Lunar resources. Solar sail like mirrors made from lunar aluminum could be launched from the lunar surface and solar sail their way to Mars polar orbit. In 10-20yrs. mirrors that could more than double Mar's insolation could be in place. If during that time a full scientific survey of Mars could be completed, then the mirrors could be aimed to reflect sunlight onto the surface.
The resulting massive floods and outgassing should make for quite a show via cameras left on the surface.
Mars would become warm and wet and only need to be seeded with life.
In round figures the mirrors would need an agregate area approx. equal to 12 million sq. mi. A reasonable guess for their mass of 100,000 lb.m/mi.^2 would mean that 600 million tons of aluminum would have to be produced with perhaps 10 times that much lunar soil needing to be processed. An operation capable of doing this in 20 yrs. would need to process about 35000 tons per hour of soil on average.

Steve
