According to Variety, the new outing will represent a "complete overhaul" of the Nightmare concept.

Bay and chums are also gearing up for a May start on resurrecting Jason Voorhees of Friday the 13th in a new film to be helmed by Marcus Nispel. This is apparently up for a "complete overhaul" as well, and movie buffs will remember just what a complete overhaul did for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre - remade in 2003 by New Line with Nispel calling the shots and Platinum Dunes lurking in the shadows.

And just to reinforce the feeling that Hollywood has completely lost the ability to come up with an original concept, Variety adds that Platinum Dunes is "prepping an exorcism thriller" for Rogue Pictures, plus a remake of Near Dark to be directed by music vid vet Samuel Bayer.

Oh yes, and the company's filling its spare time "developing a Universal remake of Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds", in which Casino Royale director Martin Campbell will presumably ensure that slated star Naomi Watts will get plenty of unwanted avian attention.

Dammit! We just finished killing the K-1 monster over at M&L, now we have to deal with Freddy Krueger again?

Crap!

I miss you more than Michael Bay missed the mark
when he made Pearl Harbor.

I miss you more than that movie missed the point
and that's an awful lot girl. ..

I don't know what to say... Seriously. How many times can Hollywood beat a dead horse? Has anyone seen ANY remake that was worth paying for at the box-office? Yet, people still go... I suppose that's encouragement enough for Hollywood.

I think there may be a handful of remakes that were worth paying for at the box-office. "The Thing" was one of them. I don't really count "The Lord of the Rings" as it was much, much more than just a remake and it was live-action to boot.

What's next, a remake of "Ishtar?"
I put on my robe and wizard hat...

Dunno if you can say that.

Batman Begins was a great 'reboot' and Dark Knight looks to be a spectacular sequel.

Also: "Chicago" was a great flick, but it had been made before; in 1942 as "Roxie Hart". Both were great flicks in their own way.

Not to mention how many times "The Front Page" has been remade under various titles....what is it 4 - 5 times since 1931?

Ocean's 11 as a remake *might* be better than its "Rat Pack" predecessor - depending on your tastes...

Wayne

"1) Give no quarter; 2) Take no prisoners; 3) Sink everything." Admiral Jackie Fisher

"Batman Begins" was decent, but it wasn't really a remake was it? It was just a different story concerning Batman's beginning than the Keaton "Batman" wasn't it?

I haven't seen "Chicago" but I have seen "Switching Channels" (Reynolds/Turner) and "The Front Page" (Lemmon/Mathau) which weren't bad.
I put on my robe and wizard hat...

I really can't stand the newer "Ocean's" movies. I'm probably doing them a disservice but I just don't really like the actors in those roles. I'm not a big Clooney fan. Maybe I'm an anti-Clooney fan. I suppose I do like the other actor's though. There's just something about Clooney that comes off "smarmy" to me.
I put on my robe and wizard hat...

A plot element of Dark Star (a very good underrated sci-fi near classic) was remade as Alien.

I enjoy the humor of Dark Star (can't help but think Red Dwarf 'borrowed' quite a bit from this movie) and the horror of Alien is almost beyond compare.

As a concept, remakes are not good or bad, and if sufficient care and money are thrown at them, they have the potential to surpass the original.

Having said that, Hollywood percieves (most) remakes as a profit center regardless of quality, and does chuck quite a bit of crappola in this format.

TPTB went to Dallas and all I got was Plucked !!

So many people, so few recipes !!

Let's clean up this stinkhole !!

Let Jason RIP I swear I hate those movies, how many times and how many storylines can you have about a guy that kills people then gets killed and comes back again.

New stuff, all these remakes are getting out of hand, and most of them are crap

The Terror From Beyond Space". In fact the similarities caused a lawsuit by the producers of "IT!" when "Alien" came out.

The screen play of "IT!" was penned by Jerome Bixby, who also wrote the classic "Star Trek" episode "Mirror, Mirror."

In reply to:

Has anyone seen ANY remake that was worth paying for at the box-office?

Oh, absolutely. The remake has a long and glorious tradition going way back to the bygone days of storytelling, when people would retell stories originally told by others. Many of Shakespeare's plays were either remakes or adaptations of other works. "Troilus and Cressida" goes way back. And of course his plays have been restaged, both in the theater and the cinema, many times.

Paintings and sculptures have also been "remakes", going way way back.

So just because it's a remake doesn't mean it will suck. However, it does seem that a large percentage of modern remakes do in fact suck. I think the only reason we just see good remakes from Shakespeare's day and before is because all the sucky remakes got forgotten, and good riddance.

"People assume that time is a strict progression of cause to effect, but actually from a non-linear, non-subjective viewpoint it's more like a big ball of wibbly wobbly . . . timey wimey . . . stuff." -- The Tenth Doctor, "Blink"

Please please be true, my opinion of Michael "money-shot" Bay is well documented on here.

If he makes this he might leave Transformers 2 to someone that can direct.
"All God does is watch us and kill us when we get boring. I heard about 'The Birds' coming back as a remake. I don't mind a remake here and there, but all Hollywood does anymore is remakes. The best remake I've seen in the last few years is 'Batman Begins'.

If Naomi Watts at least has a shower scene in 'The Birds', then I will consider going to see it

Techies: We do it in the dark.

"Put your hand on a stove for a minute and it seems like an hour. I hate the utter absence of original sf ideas in Hollywood.
Back in the late nineties I tried to submit scientifically accurate and original movie treatments and a spec script, but no one in the industry would even glance at them.

When they have finished milking the remake market...new stuff will be needed, hang in there.

My borrowed quote for the time being:

There are three kinds of people in life.
I wonder what will happen when producers have easy access to phototrealistic, sounds alike, act alike computer generated actors from the past - I wonder if we will start to see "new" episodes of TV series like "Lost in Space" with the original cast. Sort of. (Once copyright issues on likenesses are disposed of that is)

I can't wait for the "new" episodes of Kolchak. ;)

Wayne

"1) Give no quarter; 2) Take no prisoners; 3) Sink everything." Admiral Jackie Fisher
