Are scientist iqs dropping or is it the author. These things will not reduce space junk risk to the space station or any other satellite. Their mass and size will inevitably be higher than metal construction and they will not be more malleable than metal construction in any way that would reduce damage from an impact. In fact the impact will likely be worse due to mass and size increase. The only thing they will do is burn up more on reentry but that's not even a significant concern for most objects launched. Most of them will burn up in the atmosphere. Not like they are building a new skylab out of magnolia wood.

That's interesting about the wood. Seems to hold up pretty good with the extremes of space. I wonder what the moisture content was. And I wonder what it's shielding properties are.
