Great to see NASA is contemplating an extended stay on Mars. Nine months to get there, 30 day stay, and nine months to get back again. Going to be tough. Why two people? Nothing scientific but wouldn't three be better, all capable in every aspect?

If...

Spacex get's NASA's astronauts to the moon in it's lunar variant of their Starship successfully, then this is such a needless mission. Spacex will have already privately landed thousands of tons of cargo and possibly hundreds of people already onto Mars by the time this mission launches (If the variant can do the moon, it can do Mars).

If Spacex doesn't get NASA to the moon, the alternatives to get boots on the moon will take years, the cost of those companies to get us to Mars and with so few people for so little time (just a flag planting exercise) makes it a laughable mission.

The organization that lands a human(s) on Mars first will have opened a passageway to the universe. The boundaries will have been pushed back. Even a flag planting exercise on Mars -- with a safe return, hopefully -- will mean huge obstacles have been overcome.

Some inspiring words from leaders would help raise interest from the general public, imo. Kennedy, we choose to go to the moon
