It's only narrow for the narrow minded.

Equity doesn't result in the best candidates, but candidates who fit a demographic that's entirely unrelated to the skills necessary to research, develop, and launch spacecraft.

It's guaranteed, if you had 10 candidates for an engineering position, not one astronaut at NASA would want a lower skilled engineer working on their mission just because that engineer was a certain skin color or gender. Astronauts want the best people, because their life is literally on the line.
